Don’t get me wrong. San Marzano is a beautiful tomato, perfect for canning, more so if you are aiming for preserving whole tomatoes (‘pelati’). It is a great producer and the vigorous plants have low maintenance requirements. However, if your garden has limited space and you want to grow full of flavour tomatoes, we believe San Marzano might not be the right choice for you since it tastes too bland for fresh eating and requires extra work to properly enjoy it.
Instead, we can recommend a selection of outstanding tomato varieties that are multipurpose and have excellent taste either eaten fresh or cooked. We are confident you will also enjoy the thin skin and the buttery pulp these tomatoes share as common characteristics. All combined make for the best tasting, creamiest tomato sauce you’ve had in a while.
In no particular order our top 5 are:
1. Jersey Devil 2. Opalka 3. Goldman Italian 4. Buratino 5. Speckled Roman
With love for tomatoes,
Claudia
